How to Lock Outlook on a Mac

Outlook for Mac stays signed in and opens straight into your inbox and calendar. We found no setting in the Mac app that asks for Touch ID or a passcode first.

Why people want to lock Outlook

For many people Outlook holds work email, calendar invites, attachments and contacts in one place. On an unlocked Mac, one click on the dock icon opens all of it.

What doesn’t fully work

We found no built-in setting in Outlook for Mac that asks for Touch ID or a passcode when the app opens. Your Mac’s lock screen protects the Mac while it is locked, not while you are signed in and someone else is looking at the screen.

Signing out of your accounts each time you step away is safe but impractical. A second macOS user account only works if you log out first, which is rarely realistic when you hand someone your laptop for a minute.

What actually works

Shoo! ends Outlook’s process when you lock it and starts it again only after Touch ID, Apple Watch or your private backup password succeeds. It does not draw a screen over an open window, so nothing is visible while it is locked, and your Mac’s login password is never what unlocks it.

Two practical notes. While Outlook is closed it cannot show new-mail notifications or calendar reminders, so lock it when you step away rather than all day. Finish any draft you are writing before you lock, since ending the process interrupts it.

Try it free for 7 days — full functionality, no credit card, $17.99 once if you keep it.

Frequently asked

Can I lock Outlook with Touch ID on a Mac?

Yes. With Shoo! Outlook only opens after Touch ID succeeds, or after Apple Watch or a private backup password if your Mac has no Touch ID.

Does Outlook for Mac have its own app lock?

We found no setting in the Mac app that asks for Touch ID or a passcode when it opens.

Will I stay signed in to my mail after unlocking Outlook?

Your accounts and settings are stored by Outlook itself, so they are still there when it reopens. Shoo! only controls whether the Outlook process is allowed to run.

Will I miss notifications while Outlook is locked?

Yes. A closed app cannot show new-mail alerts or calendar reminders, so lock Outlook when you step away and unlock it when you are back.
